Iran has announced it will restart its oil production from 2019, with its new President Hassan Rouhani saying the goal was to produce 100,000 barrels a day by the end of 2021.

The announcement came as the US announced sanctions on four Iranian oil firms in retaliation for the Iranian parliament’s move to hold a new vote on the nuclear deal.

Rouhani, who took office in January, has said he is committed to restoring relations with the US, but the US and the EU are demanding the reinstatement of sanctions.

Rousseff’s government, backed by the United States, is seeking to return to international economic cooperation with the EU and the US after years of sanctions imposed by the Obama administration.
