UN to hold talks with Russia, Iran, Turkey on Syria

UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura said yesterday that that he will meet with Russian, Iranian and Turkish officials in Geneva to discuss the formation of a Constitutional Committee in Syria.

De Mistura said in a brief statement that he will meet the officials on 18 and 19 June, adding that other countries, which he did not name, will be invited for talks on the same matter “in time”.

The Constitutional Committee is one of the most prominent outcomes of the Sochi conference hosted by Russia in January. The United Nations hopes the committee will achieve a breakthrough to discover a way to end the seven-year war in Syria.

In May 2017 Turkey, Russia and Iran agreed to establish “de-escalation zones” in the governorates of Aleppo, Hama and Lattakia as part of talks in the Kazakh capital of Astana.

Later in September, an agreement was reached to establish a “de-escalation zone” in Idlib.
