Kris Bryant hits 8th HR, but Jose Quintana knocked out as Cubs lose 6-5

Tommy La Stella became the seventh Cubs player to bat leadoff this season, and it didn’t hurt that he was batting ahead of Kris Bryant.

La Stella led off the third inning with a single, and Bryant followed with his eighth home run off Braves starter Julio Teheran.

But the Cubs didn’t have enough firepower to match the Braves, as Jose Bautista ripped a three-run home run off Jose Quintana in the fifth that vaulted the Braves a 6-5 victory at Wrigley Field.

Bautista’s homer wiped out a 4-3 lead the Cubs once held on the strength of Bryant’s blast.

The Cubs mounted a rally in the ninth as Victor Caratini hit a single with one out and moved to second on a passed ball by Tyler Flowers. Kyle Schwarber drew a walk, and Albert Almora Jr. followed with a broken bat single to load the bases.

Pinch-hitter David Bote struck out. Ian Happ was hit by an 0-2 pitch to force in a run, but Bryant flied to left.

Quintana lasted only 4 2/3 innings after allowing nine hits, and he walked three during a 33-pitch first that started with a leadoff homer by Ozzie Albies. Flowers, who caught Quintana during a portion of their time with the White Sox, smacked a two-run homer in the third.

Catcher Willson Contreras and shortstop Addison Russell did not start against Teheran, who was tied with Cubs left-hander Jose Quintana among Columbian-born pitchers with 61 wins.

The Cubs and Braves wore No. 42 jerseys to celebrate the anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the game’s color barrier in 1947. The teams planned to wear the uniforms on April 15 — the anniversary of the day Robinson broke the color barrier — but the game was postponed due to inclement weather.
